Gertrude Stein was an American novelist, poet, playwright, and art collector. She was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, in 1874, and moved to Paris in 1903. She hosted a Paris salon, where the leading figures of modernism in literature and art, such as Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, would meet. Stein's work was experimental and often controversial, but she is considered one of the most important figures in 20th-century literature. She died in 1946.
