Cormac McCarthy (born July 20, 1933) is an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He is known for his spare, violent, and often morally ambiguous writing style.

McCarthy was born in Rhode Island and raised in Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas at El Paso. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1955.

McCarthy's first novel, The Orchard Keeper, was published in 1965. He has since published 11 more novels, including Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and The Road. He has also written two plays and several screenplays.
