Norton Juster was an American author, architect, and academic. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1929. He studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After the war, he worked as an architect in New York City and then in Western Massachusetts. He began writing while in the Navy and published his first book, *The Phantom Tollbooth*, in 1961. The book was a Newbery Honor Book and has been translated into over 20 languages. Juster continued to write throughout his life, publishing several more books for children and adults. He died in 2021 at the age of 91.
