George Steiner was a Franco-American literary critic, essayist, philosopher, novelist and educator. He was born in Paris in 1929 to Jewish parents. He fled to the United States in 1940 and became a naturalized citizen in 1944. He studied at the University of Chicago and Harvard University, and taught at the University of Geneva, Oxford University, and Cambridge University. He wrote extensively on the relationship between language, literature and society, as well as the impact of the Holocaust. He died in Cambridge, England in 2020.
