Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was a German philosopher who lived from 1770 to 1831. He is considered one of the most important figures in German idealism and one of the founding figures of modern Western philosophy. His influence extends across the entire range of contemporary philosophical topics, from metaphysical issues in epistemology and ontology, to political philosophy, the philosophy of history, philosophy of art, philosophy of religion, and the history of philosophy.

Hegel was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and studied theology and philosophy at the University of Tübingen. After graduating, he worked as a tutor and a private lecturer. In 1818, he was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Berlin, where he taught until his death in 1831.

Hegel's most important works include The Phenomenology of Spirit, The Science of Logic, The Philosophy of Right, and The Philosophy of History. His work is notoriously difficult to understand, but it has had a profound influence on the development of Western philosophy.
