Daniel Keyes (1927-2014) was an American writer best known for his novel Flowers for Algernon. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended New York University briefly before joining the United States Maritime Service. After returning to New York, he received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Brooklyn College. He then worked as an editor for Marvel Comics and EC Comics. In 1959, he published the short story "Flowers for Algernon," which won the Hugo and Nebula Awards. The story was later expanded into a novel in 1966. Keyes continued to write fiction and nonfiction until his death in 2014.
