Colin Powell was a four-star general and the first African-American Secretary of State. He was born in Harlem, New York, in 1937, and rose through the ranks of the military to become Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1989. He retired from the military in 1993 and was appointed Secretary of State by President George W. Bush in 2001. He served in that position until 2005. Powell died in 2021 at the age of 84.
