Christopher Hitchens was a British-American author, journalist, and public intellectual. He was born in Portsmouth, England, in 1949. He studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford University. After graduating, he worked as a journalist for The Times Higher Education Supplement, The New Statesman, and Vanity Fair. He was also a regular contributor to The Nation and Slate. Hitchens was a vocal critic of religion and a strong advocate for atheism. He wrote several books on these topics, including God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Hitchens died of esophageal cancer in 2011.
