Charles William Eliot was an American academic who served as president of Harvard University from 1869 to 1909. He is credited with transforming Harvard from a provincial college into a world-class research university.
Eliot was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1834. He graduated from Harvard in 1853 and then studied chemistry and pedagogy in Europe. In 1869, he was elected president of Harvard, a position he held for 40 years.
During his time at Harvard, Eliot oversaw a number of reforms, including the introduction of elective courses, the establishment of graduate programs, and the creation of a new curriculum that emphasized the study of science and modern languages.
