Sylvia Plath was born on October 27, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts. She was a poet, novelist, and short story writer. She is best known for her two published collections of poetry, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960) and Ariel (1965), as well as The Bell Jar, a semi-autobiographical novel published shortly before her suicide in 1963.
Plath was born into a middle-class family and attended Smith College, where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. After graduating from Smith, she received a Fulbright scholarship to study at Newnham College, Cambridge. In 1956, she married fellow poet Ted Hughes. They had two children together, Frieda and Nicholas, before divorcing in 1962.
Plath struggled with depression throughout her life and was treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). She died by suicide on February 11, 1963, at the age of 30.
Plath's work has been praised for its raw emotion and honesty. She is considered one of the most important poets of the 20th century.
