Sarah Orne Jewett was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet. She was born in South Berwick, Maine in 1849. Her family had been residents of New England for many generations. Jewett's father was a doctor and she often accompanied him on his rounds, becoming acquainted with the sights and sounds of her native land and its people.
Jewett began her writing career at a young age and her first collection of short stories, Deephaven, was published in 1877. She went on to write many more short stories and novels, including The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896), which is considered one of her masterpieces.
Jewett was a major figure in the American literary scene of the late 19th century. She was known for her realistic portrayals of life in rural New England and her strong female characters. She died in 1909 at the age of 59.
