Ludovic Halévy was a French author and playwright, best known for his collaborations with Henri Meilhac on Georges Bizet's Carmen and on the works of Jacques Offenbach.
He was born in Paris in 1834 and died in 1908. He was the son of Léon Halévy, a civil servant and writer, and Alexandrine Lebas. His uncle, Fromental Halévy, was a noted composer of opera.
Halévy began his career as a journalist, but soon turned to writing for the theater. He collaborated with Meilhac on over 30 operettas, including La Vie parisienne, La Belle Hélène, and La Périchole. He also wrote several novels, including L'Abbé Constantin and L'Invasion.
Halévy was elected to the Académie française in 1884. He was a member of the Jockey Club and a close friend of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.
