He was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1788 and died there in 1858. He served as Adjutant General of the U.S. Army from 1821 to 1822 and as U.S. Minister to Mexico from 1853 to 1856. He is best known for negotiating the Gadsden Purchase, which added 76,800 square miles of territory to the United States.
