John Calvin was a French theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism, including its doctrines of predestination and of God's absolute sovereignty in the salvation of the human soul from death and eternal damnation.

Calvin was born in Noyon, France, in 1509. He studied law at the University of Paris, but after a religious experience in 1533, he abandoned his legal studies and devoted himself to theology. In 1536, he published his Institutes of the Christian Religion, which became the most important theological treatise of the Protestant Reformation.

Calvin fled France in 1536 because of religious persecution and settled in Geneva, Switzerland. In Geneva, he established a Protestant church and school system, and he wrote many influential works on theology, politics, and education. He died in Geneva in 1564.

Calvin's ideas had a profound impact on the development of Protestantism, and his influence can still be seen in many Protestant churches today.

We should ask God to increase our hope when it is small, awaken it when it is dormant, confirm it when it is wavering, strengthen it when it is weak, and raise it up when it is overthrown.
