Alan Bennett was born in Leeds, England in 1934. He studied history at Oxford University and then worked as a journalist and broadcaster. In the 1960s, he became a successful comedy writer, co-creating the revue Beyond the Fringe with Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller, and Dudley Moore. Bennett went on to write plays, screenplays, and television and radio programs. He was known for his sharp wit and his insights into British society. Bennett was awarded the Companion of Honour in 2009 and the Order of the Companions of Literature in 2014. He died in 2019 at the age of 85.
