Tracy Chevalier is an American-British author who writes historical fiction. She was born in Washington, D.C. in 1962 and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. She studied English at Oberlin College and moved to England in 1984. She worked as a reference book editor before becoming a full-time writer. Her first novel, The Virgin Blue, was published in 1997. She is best known for her novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, which was published in 1999 and adapted into a film in 2003. Chevalier has written nine other novels, including The Lady and the Unicorn (2003), The Last Runaway (2013), and The Duchess of Malfi (2021). She is a member of the Royal Society of Literature and the Society of Authors.
