Morrie Schwartz was born in New York City on December 20, 1916. He was a sociology professor at Brandeis University for 30 years. In 1995, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He died in November of 1995, less than two years after being diagnosed with the disease.
