Khushwant Singh was an Indian author, lawyer, diplomat, journalist and politician. He was born in 1915 in Hadali, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He was educated at the Government College, Lahore, and King's College, London. After practicing law for a few years, he joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1947. He left the IFS in 1951 to become a journalist. He was the founder-editor of Yojana, The National Herald and The Illustrated Weekly of India. He was also the author of several books, including Train to Pakistan, Delhi: A Novel, and I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale. He died in 2014 at the age of 99.
